They are a critical factor in the compartmentation of buildings in the event of a fire. As a result, the correct specification, application and maintenance of door closers can help save lives. Our aim has always been to create door closers that balance design and ease of access while meeting the most stringent standards for peace of mind. We offer the most innovative, compliant and widest range of door controls meaning we have a solution for every application. Our heritage dates back to the invention of door closers in 1880. Lewis Norton invented a device that controlled the closing of a door by regulating air passing through a chamber. It proved so innovative he formed the Norton Door Closer Company. Twenty years later Norton unveiled the fluid door closer, which replaced air with oil and controlled the spring with adjustable valves. It was an invention that remains fundamentally unchanged to this day. Norton is one of our group divisions and we have continued to innovate with the same spirit as Lewis Norton. Our experience with door closers started over 80 years ago, we have a history of innovation which is evident through us pioneering the use of alloy bodies, slimline units, non-handed closers, adjustable backcheck, speed adjustment and special application arms. We’re proud to have been at the start of the story of door closers and continue to lead the way today. To ensure a door closer is suitable for the door type, it is important to understand its scope of certification. Our fire test certification is clearly indicated to illustrate its suitability across timber and metal doors, tests range from 30 to 240 minutes and detail all suitable fixing configurations. For concealed units intumescent kit details are also stated. What is the door width and weight? The width and weight of the door dictates what door closer size needs to be used, each closer is tested to comply with the standard EN 1154 to ensure safety and functionality on all doors. Which way does the door open? What is the direction of operation – are you pulling or pushing the door to open it? Our fire test certification ensures fixing configurations are clearly highlighted to ensure suitability and coverage on both leaf and frame head (transom) mounting applications. assaabloy.com 21 Door controls Introduction What additional functions are required? Additional features can help ensure your closer is the perfect solution for your door. Adjustable functions To fulfil the requirements of EN 1154 all door closers have a closing and latching speed function. Some door closers may also have additional features such as backcheck and closing delay functions. Closing speed Latching speed Backcheck Closing delay Closing speed: Speed of door leaf during closing cycle from any angle to approx 15° Latching speed: Speed of door leaf in the final 15° of closing until it reaches its fully closed position. Designed to allow closers to overcome the resistance of a door latch in the last stage of closing without slamming Backcheck: Opening motion of the door is hydraulically slowed down from an opening angle of about 75°, this can be beneficial on outward opening external doors and internally helps to prevent damage to the surrounding structure and handles Closing delay: Delay in the closing speed between its maximum opening angle to about 70°, giving you additional time to pass through the doorway Electromagnetic functions Electromagnetic door closers include hold-open and free-swing functions which are suitable for building applications with high traffic, or to provide ease of accessibility for the less able. They also help eliminate touch points. Hold-open: The door is held open at the selected opening angle (beyond 65°), until the power is cut when fire or smoke alarms are triggered, releasing the hold open function and allowing door to close. Free-swing: The door operates as if there is no door closer present. When the alarm signal is received, the door closer shuts the door regardless of the door position. Integrated with a fire or smoke alarm, electromagnetic door closers either release the door (hold-open) or allow the door closer to work conventionally (free-swing), closing the door when the alarm is triggered or they are manually released. What type of door closer is required? A wide range of closers to suit all functionalities, aesthetics and end user preference. Cam-Motion® technology provides rapidly decreasing or increasing torque to assist with the closing and opening of doors. They are provided with a guide rail, which sits flush to the frame. These door controls are the most traditional and widest used style; they are supplied complete with a projecting link arm to allow the opening and closing motion, parallel (non-projecting) options are also available. Rack and pinion Concealed Floor spring Transom Special solutions Cam-Motion® Designed not to be seen, whilst still offering class-leading performance across a wide range of applications with high efficiencies and easier opening. Floor springs are concealed under the finished floor level to offer control to your door with the unit hidden from view. They are especially suited to areas with high traffic as well as heavier doorsets. Concealed in the frame head and traditionally associated with aluminium systems, when fire rated they also offer reliable closing for timber or metal doors. This is particularly beneficial in place of floor springs where a project does not allow for floor mounting. Specialist door closers can provide additional benefits around locking, slamming and also large or more demanding door applications. These products offer additional aspects to support and solve such issues and provide a perfect solution for challenging projects. TIP In accordance with building regulations free-swing closers are recommended for use on care home bedroom doors. The use of free-swing function should be thoroughly considered for applications such as nurseries. Doors with an uncontrolled free-swinging state could be a hazard to small children. For these applications, we recommend a controlled free-swing door closer.

assaabloy.com 23 Door controls Introduction Legislation CE marking Fire door closers and doorsets provide fire protection and smoke control. They play a critical role in the compartmentation of buildings, which can help save lives. Only door closers which are UKCA / CE marked and certified to meet the requirements of EN 1154 are suitable for fire and smoke protection applications. Additional certifications are required for electromagnetic door closers (EN 1155) and for door coordinating devices (EN 1158). We have UKCA / CE marked door closers suitable for all applications, from our rack and pinion range through to our high performance Cam-Motion® door closers with guide rails, transom closers, floor spring and specialist solutions. Requirements for the application of CE marking on a door closer: Compliance with EN 1154 Compliance with EN 1155 and/or EN 1158, where applicable Evidence of audit testing of the certified product Regular factory process control inspections N otified independent certification body to provide verification of the compliance claims Transom closers are ‘hidden’ in the head of the frame and can offer a closing or hold-open solution. Given the diverse range of doorset styles in the market, transom closers are sold as a collection of body and accessories, each specified and ordered separately to achieve the desired result. Key transom closer accessories: Concealed under the finished floor level with the ability to control single and double action doors, floor springs offer enhanced practicality for certain environments such as high traffic doors, heavier doors or glass doors. In addition to the body, accessories are specified and ordered separately, to give a perfectly tailored solution for each doorset. assaabloy.com 25 Door controls Legislation Door closer power size EN 1154 – Controlled door closing devices All controlled door closing devices are covered by a harmonised European standard, EN 1154. This standard classifies door closing devices under a 6 digit coding system. Each digit refers to a particular feature of the product measured against the standard’s performance requirements. The classification code can be identified on a product’s CE mark label. EN 1154 classification key Grading scope EN 1154:1996+A1:2002 FIRE BEHAVIOUR AND RESISTANCE Having successfully completed a fire test to EN 1634-1 Grade 0: Not suitable for use on fire/smoke door assemblies Grade 1: Suitable for use on fire/smoke door assemblies (0/1) SAFETY All door closers are required to satisfy the requirement of safety in use. Only Grade 1 is identified (1) CATEGORY OF USE Identifies the angle from which the device will close the door in a controlled manner. Grade 3: For closing doors from at least 105° open Grade 4: For closing doors from 180° open (3/4) (8) NUMBER OF TEST CYCLES Only one test duration is identified for door closers manufactured to this standard: Grade 8: 500,000 test cycles (0-4) CORROSION RESISTANCE Corrosion resistance to EN 1670 Neutral Salt Spray test and operation of the product at extreme temperatures. Where a door closer provides a range of power sizes both the minimum and the maximum sizes shall be identified. The above power sizes can be applied in three different closer types 1) F ixed – 1 power size only 2) Template – multiple power sizes by moving the closer body along the door face 3) Variable – infinite adjustment within range of sizes Fixed size closers have 1 digit in the third classification box, template closers list all possible grades in the third classification box, variable closers show the maximum and minimum grades in the third classification box.

assaabloy.com 27 Door controls Legislation EN 1155 – Electrically powered hold-open devices Closers which are controlled by an electromagnetic function allow doors to be held open as required. In addition to EN 1154, electromagnetic closers must meet the additional requirements of EN 1155. In the event of a fire, the fire alarm trigger cuts power to the electromagnetic door closer, allowingthe door to close to prevent fire and smoke from spreading. It is this ability to automatically release and shut that makes EN 1155 hold open products safe for use on fire doors where pure mechanical hold-open units cannot be used. (1) CATEGORY OF USE Only Grade 3 category of use is identified for electronically powered hold-open devices and door coordinating devices. For doors used by the public and others, with little incentive to take care, i.e. where there is some chance of misuse of the door. (3) TEST DOOR MASS/SIZE Five door mass grades and related hold-open power sizes are identified (refer to power size table opposite). Where an electrically powered hold-open device and door coordinator device is suitable for a range of door closer power sizes, both the minimum and maximum power sizes shall be identified (5/8) NUMBER OF TEST CYCLES Two test durations are identified for devices manufactured to this standard: Grade 5: 50,000 test cycles. For all electrically powered hold-open devices Grade 8: 500,000 test cycles 1. For electrically powered hold-open and free-swing door closers and devices that contain operating arms 2. This is achieved by using UKCA / CE marked door coordinator devices which meet EN 1158. These devices independently control both door leaves, ensuring double doors close in the correct order. Some of our Cam-Motion® door closing devices can be installed with mechanically coordinated guide rails which meet the requirements of EN 1158. Coordinators and optional smoke detectors can be installed with a range of our electromagnetic hold-open systems, making them suitable for fire and smoke protection doors. The specifier should be able to tailor the door control for any project safe in the knowledge that fire compliance is maintained. Approved Document M To help meet Approved Document M it is important to reduce the opening force in line with BS 8300 whereever possible or look at removing any required opening force by selecting a door closer with barrier-free advanced features such as: Free-motion® (free swinging) Hold-open To accommodate the accessibility requirements of less able users, we recommend using high efficiency door controls with low opening forces which are independently tested to BS 8300. BS 8300-2:2018 – Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment BS 8300 considers the design of buildings and their approach to meet the needs of the less abled or impaired, providing guidance on good practice for the design of new buildings to meet the needs of all users. For doorsets to comply with BS 8300 the opening force should be no more than 30N between 0-30º and the closing force no more than 22.5N. This enables all users to safely and easily operate doors.
