assaabloy.com 17 Door controls Introduction Door controls The purpose of door closers is to close doors in a safe and controlled way. They are a critical factor in the compartmentation of buildings in the event of a fire. As a result, the correct specification, application and maintenance of door closers can help save lives. Our aim has always been to create door closers that balance design and ease of access while meeting the most stringent standards for peace of mind. We offer the most innovative, compliant and widest range of door controls meaning we have a solution for every application. Our heritage dates back to the invention of door closers in 1880. Lewis Norton invented a device that controlled the closing of a door by regulating air passing through a chamber. It proved so innovative he formed the Norton Door Closer Company. Twenty years later Norton unveiled the fluid door closer, which replaced air with oil and controlled the spring with adjustable valves. It was an invention that remains fundamentally unchanged to this day. Norton is one of our group divisions and we have continued to innovate with the same spirit as Lewis Norton. Our experience with door closers started over 80 years ago, we have a history of innovation which is evident through us pioneering the use of alloy bodies, slimline units, non-handed closers, adjustable backcheck, speed adjustment and special application arms. We’re proud to have been at the start of the story of door closers and continue to lead the way today.
