Once the door is closed, the door latch and/or deadbolt extends into the strike plate holes(s) which helps to keep it locked tight as well as protecting the door frame from damage. When the lock has a latch mechanism the strike plate will typically have a lip. The lip assists the latch in retracting as it comes into contact with the strike plate during the closing motion of the door. Higher security locks can be supplied with a security box strike. This includes a flat strike plate with a box attached to the back to provide additional security as well as ensuring no debris gets inside the lockcase. A splinter guard is another accessory, which works like a box strike, but is not attached to the strike plate. This will ensure no debris gets inside the lockcase, however it does not offer additional security.
