We bring people together. People who want to give their time, money and expertise so those in need can meet the challenges they face and achieve their potential. Since 1999, with the help of our generous supporters across the county and beyond, we have raised and given out almost £70 million to help over 3,400 groups and 7,400 individuals. About Us Living in Cumbria has some serious upsides. A World Heritage Status landscape with good people who look out for each other. It can also be tough. Really tough. The beautiful landscape hides intense poverty and lack of opportunity. Two things that fuel each other. Cumbria has a strong history of community and people working together to face challenges. We exist to continue and build that community. Why we do what we do We can help you transform lives in your community Call us: 01900 825760 2 3 Email us: enquiries@cumbriafoundation.org
Endowment Funds We invest donations and use the resulting investment returns to award grants. In this way, your donations continue to make an impact forever. With effective investment management, an endowment fund will distribute more money in grants than the value of the original donation. These funds can be built over time and are an excellent option if you would like your charitable giving to provide long-term support for the causes and communities you care about. We have different fund values that determine grant making. The table below illustrates those values and the endowment fund options available to you. Create a Grant Making Fund We manage more than 110 grant making funds on behalf of businesses and individuals, each of which is set up in line with the donors’ wishes, to address a range of issues across the county. Grant making funds are at the heart of the work of the Foundation, providing a home for people and businesses that want to make more significant, normally longer-term commitments to the local community. Becoming a fundholder can be an enriching and rewarding experience. We have two fund models to choose from – Endowment and Flow Through. With both options you can give your fund a name of your choice e.g. a family or business name. You can also build the value through regular or one-off donations. For each type of fund, we will: • Create a fund agreement that captures and tailors your interests, causes and communities you would like to support. • Designate a Grants Officer who will manage your Fund and be the key point of contact with you and applicants. This includes advising applicants, assessing applications as well as ensuring all monitoring and follow up is undertaken. • Provide an annual fund report informing you about the people and projects supported by you during the year. Flow Through Funds This model means all of the money held in the fund is spent within 12 to 18 months on projects you would like to support, making an immediate impact on the project and community. The minimum donation is £15,000 per year and you can advise the Foundation on which projects should receive grants. Normally, flow through funds are topped up by supporters on an annual basis. Fibrus Community Fund Case Study The Fund offers grants to enable people to stay connected, whether it is young people accessing online resources for school, or elderly people video calling family. Organisations who have been supported include Carlisle Sight Advice who have purchased smart speakers to support interactive training sessions for visually impaired people, and Friends of St Cuthbert’s School in Wigton, to purchase iPads for use by digitally excluded children. “We saw a real need in Cumbria to address digital poverty. By enabling those in need to access computers and online services, we can boost the opportunities of youngsters and improve the quality of life for older people.” Dean Jooste, Stakeholder Director at Fibrus Field of Interest and Donor Advised Funds Fund Value Name Description Up to £50,000 Acorn There is no minimum donation or timescale to reach £50,000, meaning you can add to your fund when you can. Investment returns from your Fund are allocated to our Cumbria Fund and its grant making, so that your donations are making a difference from the start. £50,000+ Field of Interest Your Fund can award grants in its own name that align with the agreed grant making criteria (field of interest). Or The Fund continues to contribute to the Cumbria Fund and its grant making (dependent on your wishes). Investment returns from your Fund are used for its own grant making. £150,000+ Donor Advised Your Fund can award grants in its own name and that align with the agreed grant making criteria (field of interest). Working with your designated Grants Officer, you can advise the Foundation on which specific projects you would like to receive grants. Or The Fund continues to contribute to the Cumbria Fund and its own grant making (dependent on your wishes). Investment returns from your Fund are used for its own grant making. "Our fund was first established in 2009 so that people working for Westmorland could access funding for community projects which they were personally involved in. It seemed like a great way for us to support projects which our staff care about. Because Cumbria Community Foundation manages the fund, we benefit from their unrivalled knowledge of community need in Cumbria". Acorn Funds We appreciate that not everyone who wants to create a fund will be in the position to donate a large amount of money in the first instance. That’s why Acorn Funds are a great way for anyone to start to build up a named fund with us. We manage your donations so that they contribute to grant making from our Cumbria Fund from the get-go. You can continue to add to the fund so that it becomes a Field of Interest or Donor Advised Fund if you wish. It really is up to you. Mission CX Ben and Joanne Slater, Directors of MissionCX, have strong ties with West Cumbria and were keen to build an ethos of supporting their community within the business. They are growing their Acorn Fund by donating 1% of annual profits and also vesting non-voting shares in the business to the Community Foundation. “We are committed to leaving a lasting, positive legacy for our local community, through our 1% pledge initiative, which commits 1% of our profits, equity, time and product to philanthropic endeavours. It is our intent to grow our acorn into an oak tree, maximising our social impact.” - Ben Slater, Managing Director, MissionCX Donate to or fundraise for one of our existing funds Many people choose to donate to one of our established grant making funds. These range from funds dedicated specifically to the needs of children and young people, vulnerable adults to access to arts and culture or emergency appeals such as flooding. Cumbria Fund The Cumbria Fund provides grants for projects tackling the most serious issues in our county. These issues include poverty, young people at risk, children and families in crisis, mental wellbeing and support for victims of crime. Many of our donors choose to give through the Cumbria Fund. Better Tomorrows Fund The fund was created to encourage people within Cumbria to become accredited in youth work and substantially increase the number of young people having access to support from youth workers to help them reach their full potential. This unique initiative provides accredited levels 2 and 3 youth work training as well as offer grants of up to £75,000 over 3 years to community organisations setting up or providing new youth work opportunities for local people. “Through participation in youth work, young people gain confidence and competence, develop self-assurance, and have the opportunity to establish high expectations and aspirations for themselves.“ David Beeby, Fund Founder Winter Warmth Fund High levels of hard to heat homes and fuel poverty mean on average 300 older Cumbrians die of cold related illnesses every year. That is why we hold the annual Winter Warmth Appeal that provides vital financial help with energy costs to residents aged over 60. Donations make a huge difference to people’s lives. Mary Morsby is 69 and lives on her own on Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness. With significant health issues that are aggravated by the cold, Mary said: “If I can’t keep the house warm, or warmish, then I get bad coughing fits and my chest gets tight. The money was like a godsend really. It helped me to put money on the gas and electric and get warmer. I am very grateful to the people who donate, they don’t know how much of a difference it makes. It’s a life saver. It’s hard, the thought of facing winter.” Mary Morsby Better Tomorrows participants From little acorns… Bridget’s Magical Music Pot Bridget Hilton was a remarkable, inspiring and loved lady who spent her life encouraging people to play music for fun. She died in 2018 from a brain tumour, after a short illness. A teacher by profession, Bridget believed in the power of music to bring people together and change lives for the better. After her death, Bridget’s family decided to create a grant-giving legacy that would open up new opportunities for more people to enjoy making music and that would help Bridget’s kindness and generosity live on. Through fundraising and donations from friends and family, the fund has reached a fund value of £50,000 which means we can distribute grants in its name to local community music groups. Trust Transfers There are thousands of small charitable trusts across the UK that have become dormant or hard for trustees to manage. We can: • Help invigorate a trust by assisting with its grant making, assuming grant management, or taking over a trust completely. • Update its objectives while continuing to distribute grants in the spirit of the original donors’ intentions. • Handle all of the administrative work in the transfer process. A trust transfer to the Foundation means the funds are actively managed and continue to be used to support those who need it most. Laurel House Brampton Fund Case Study Laurel House in Brampton was gifted to the senior citizens of the town in the 1960s, having been set up by Mrs Mary Cartmell as a warm and welcoming place for older people. For 40 years it became a social hub providing hot meals and companionship for those who were at risk of becoming socially isolated. When it became too expensive to run, the house was sold and proceeds were invested via a trust. This provided grants to local groups supporting older people in Brampton through The Laurel House Management Committee. As the committee members themselves were growing older, the decision was made to transfer the trust to the Foundation to carry on Mrs Cartmell’s legacy. The Laurel House Brampton Fund has been set up at the Foundation and continues to operate as Mrs Cartmell wished. Some former committee members remain involved and have been advising on grant applications to provide continuity. Brampton Old Peoples’s Association, a previous grant recipient from the committee, received a £2,000 grant from the Laurel House Brampton Fund. This has enabled them to take 150 people on free day trips to Whitby and Southport and even provide a subsidised Christmas Dinner. The Farmer Network Formed in 2006 as an independent not-for-profit company, the Network has provided help and support to 1,150 farmers across Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. Business Support for The Young People Working in Agriculture programme is a beneficiary of the Brian and Ann Clark Fund and supports young people aged 18-30 who want to start a farming related business. This includes a three-day basic business course, one-toone business advice, access to grants, low-rate business loans and up to two years support from mentors. The success of the programme and pledges from past participants to mentor future farmers has created a legacy of support and inspiration for farmers of the future. Leave a gift in your will and create a lasting legacy By making Cumbria Community Foundation a beneficiary of your will you are making a valuable contribution to a better future for our communities. The Foundation can work with you now, or your Professional Adviser, to ensure that your wishes are met and that your generosity will last for generations to come. Legacy gifts to the Foundation are exempt from inheritance tax. Anyone leaving at least 10% of their estate in their will to charity benefits from an effective reduction in inheritance tax on the rest of their estate from 40% to 36%. You may wish to: • Donate to an existing fund. • Set up a fund tailored to your charitable goals and causes you care about. • Celebrate the life of a loved one by setting up a memorial fund in their name. Brian and Ann Clark Fund Case Study The Brian and Ann Clark Fund was created in 2016 by Ann Clark and supports projects working with families, including those with a disability or mental health issues, and to assist young people in the advancement of their education. Mrs Clark said: “I came to Cumbria Community Foundation late on in my life and at the most appropriate time as I needed to store my surplus capital where it could benefit others. The Foundation has taken that all off my shoulders with the added reassurance that their choices take account of my own preferences.” When Ann died she chose to leave over £500,000 in her will to grow the fund, enabling it to provide significant and enduring support for the causes close to her heart. Governance The governance of the Foundation is overseen by our Board of Trustees. Recruited from across the county, they consist of local business people, those with experience and knowledge of local issues, and those working on the frontline of supporting communities. All bring their own skills in ensuring our staff, volunteers and donors are well served to provide the best possible grant making decisions. Investment Management The charitable resources entrusted to us are overseen by an Investment Committee, a group of experienced Trustees who live locally and have relevant financial knowledge to oversee the Foundation’s investment managers. They delegate the ongoing management of funds to professional, UK-based investment managers, who have demonstrated a successful track record over the longer term, have sound market reputations and experience in the charity sector. Informing these relationships and delegating to the investment managers, Trustees expect each to have considered the suitability of investments in isolation and in the context of the overall portfolios managed in attaining our objectives. Appointed investment managers are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Investment Committee receives quarterly reports and valuations and meets with each manager at least once a year. Performance is monitored quarterly against agreed benchmarks, with a formal review taking place at least every five years. Growing Well Case Study The charity was set up in 2004 on a farm on the outskirts of Kendal. Funding in excess of £255,000 from the Foundation allows it to continue to provide a safe, supportive working environment to nurture mental health recovery. It works with people on a weekly basis, sometimes over years, to help rebuild a sense of purpose, to engage in meaningful and fulfilling activity and to build hope for the future. Distributing Donations We want to make sure that the money you generously donate is used to provide the best possible support and outcomes The research we carry out is key in ensuring we understand the priority issues in our communities and where there are gaps in support. We talk with other funders and charities to make sure there is a joined-up approach to providing help. We have published a number of Community Needs Reports which can be found on our website. Our grant making priorities reflect this and allow us to focus where support is needed. The Grant Making Process Who receives a grant is not just decided by our staff. We have three grants committees and we also work with advisory panels who have expert knowledge of a specific sector or geographical area. If your fund is donor advised we will also include you in the process. Our committee members include trustees, grants officers and experienced community leaders. We encourage any applicant to talk to our grants officers before they submit an application to allow the process to go as smoothly as possible. Why give through the Foundation? Giving Back Tuesday’s Tonic Case Study In 2022 Keswick Museum launched a monthly session, Tuesday’s Tonic, for local people suffering from dementia and their carers which the Johnson Fund supports. Each two-hour session is led by a highly experienced local facilitator supported by museum volunteers and hosted in the accessible Crosthwaite Room. The free sessions enable groups of older people to come together to enjoy each other’s company, participate in relaxed arts and heritage activities, and share vital conversation to break the isolation many were experiencing. We can work with you to tailor your support and donations to meet your charitable goals. We do our research so that we can focus on where the needs are. We have expert knowledge on the challenges and opportunities across the county. Cumbria has over 3,000 charities and community groups. We support those organisations. Many are small, little known and doing invaluable work We handle all of the administrative tasks from investments, annual reporting and due diligence over the organisations that apply for grants. We can maximise the impact of your gift to make a real difference year on year. “We were particularly attracted to CCF, as a means of supporting local need in an efficient, well managed and focused way. We appreciate the benefits of them looking after all the paperwork including investment management, project sourcing and monitoring, and welcome the donor advisory facility which encourages a continuing partnership of interest between CCF and donors, and which can hopefully continue through our family after our day.” Jim and Eve Johnson, Johnson Fund, supporting projects that help carers of people with dementia, artistic excellence in young people and those that help young people to fulfil their potential.
