Trust Transfers There are thousands of small charitable trusts across the UK that have become dormant or hard for trustees to manage. We can: • Help invigorate a trust by assisting with its grant making, assuming grant management, or taking over a trust completely. • Update its objectives while continuing to distribute grants in the spirit of the original donors’ intentions. • Handle all of the administrative work in the transfer process. A trust transfer to the Foundation means the funds are actively managed and continue to be used to support those who need it most. Laurel House Brampton Fund Case Study Laurel House in Brampton was gifted to the senior citizens of the town in the 1960s, having been set up by Mrs Mary Cartmell as a warm and welcoming place for older people. For 40 years it became a social hub providing hot meals and companionship for those who were at risk of becoming socially isolated. When it became too expensive to run, the house was sold and proceeds were invested via a trust. This provided grants to local groups supporting older people in Brampton through The Laurel House Management Committee. As the committee members themselves were growing older, the decision was made to transfer the trust to the Foundation to carry on Mrs Cartmell’s legacy. The Laurel House Brampton Fund has been set up at the Foundation and continues to operate as Mrs Cartmell wished. Some former committee members remain involved and have been advising on grant applications to provide continuity. Brampton Old Peoples’s Association, a previous grant recipient from the committee, received a £2,000 grant from the Laurel House Brampton Fund. This has enabled them to take 150 people on free day trips to Whitby and Southport and even provide a subsidised Christmas Dinner. The Farmer Network Formed in 2006 as an independent not-for-profit company, the Network has provided help and support to 1,150 farmers across Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. Business Support for The Young People Working in Agriculture programme is a beneficiary of the Brian and Ann Clark Fund and supports young people aged 18-30 who want to start a farming related business. This includes a three-day basic business course, one-toone business advice, access to grants, low-rate business loans and up to two years support from mentors. The success of the programme and pledges from past participants to mentor future farmers has created a legacy of support and inspiration for farmers of the future. Leave a gift in your will and create a lasting legacy By making Cumbria Community Foundation a beneficiary of your will you are making a valuable contribution to a better future for our communities. The Foundation can work with you now, or your Professional Adviser, to ensure that your wishes are met and that your generosity will last for generations to come. Legacy gifts to the Foundation are exempt from inheritance tax. Anyone leaving at least 10% of their estate in their will to charity benefits from an effective reduction in inheritance tax on the rest of their estate from 40% to 36%. You may wish to: • Donate to an existing fund. • Set up a fund tailored to your charitable goals and causes you care about. • Celebrate the life of a loved one by setting up a memorial fund in their name. Brian and Ann Clark Fund Case Study The Brian and Ann Clark Fund was created in 2016 by Ann Clark and supports projects working with families, including those with a disability or mental health issues, and to assist young people in the advancement of their education. Mrs Clark said: “I came to Cumbria Community Foundation late on in my life and at the most appropriate time as I needed to store my surplus capital where it could benefit others. The Foundation has taken that all off my shoulders with the added reassurance that their choices take account of my own preferences.” When Ann died she chose to leave over £500,000 in her will to grow the fund, enabling it to provide significant and enduring support for the causes close to her heart.
