Cumbria Community Foundation - West Cumbria Opportunities and Challenges

Active Cumbria Hosted by Cumberland Council, Active Cumbria is one of 43 Active Partnerships across England that work in partnership to tackle inequalities and increase participation in physical activity and sport in line with Sport England’s strategy ‘Uniting the Movement.’ Sport England have committed to invest £250m over the next 5-year period in 80 to 100 places across England, including three areas in Cumberland: • Flimby, Ellenborough and Broughton Moor in Maryport • Workington West • Mirehouse, Kells and Woodhouse in Whitehaven System change is at the heart of this work in these target areas. The focus is not only on increasing the amount of physical activity on offer in these places, but also on changing the way organisations behave in order to make physical activity more accessible to more people. A launch event in November 2023 brought together 60 delegates, including representatives from Cumberland Council, Public Health and VCSE organisations, to commit to the place-based approach. Planning meetings are currently underway in each area, involving individuals from a range of organisations interested in supporting work at a local level. These groups will be the driving force for the place-based work and will continue to come together regularly to help shape the direction of travel in each place. This is just the beginning of this exciting piece of work which will in time change the way people in West Cumbria think about, and engage in, physical activity and sport. West Cumbria Mental Health Partnership West Cumbria Mental Health Partnership was founded in 2021, in response to the closure of Mind West Cumbria, with the aim of creating a coordinated and collaborative approach to community mental health provision across the former boroughs of Allerdale and Copeland. Since the programme, more than 20 charitable organisations have been funded to provide a range of accessible, community-based support services to prevent mental ill health and improve emotional wellbeing across the region. During the first three years, more than 5,000 adults and 2,000 children and young people have been supported. The partnership is led by Groundwork North East & Cumbria, funded by Sellafield Ltd, through its Transforming West Cumbria programme, and delivered by Cumbria Community Foundation. It is overseen by a steering group of public, health and third sector representatives. Four programmes of support are available, each led by a strategic partner. • Adult mental health – services include talking therapies; counselling; fitness and exercise support; drop-in support groups; alternative and complementary therapies and coping strategies; walking for wellness; and fun activity sessions. • Youth mental health – services include talk support; bullying support; body image, gaming, gambling, and addiction support, and support for care leavers and the LGBTQ community • Recovery College – services include courses and workshops to help people develop coping strategies and mental health symptom management. • Financial wellbeing – services include a priority referral route and general financial advice and support. More than 80 organisations also meet regularly as part of the wider partnership to understand what services are available, how they can refer people into these services, understand gaps in provision and identify barriers to accessing support.
