Cumbria Community Foundation - Annual Review 2022

23 Lois Holiday home owners give back to our communities The Cumbria Home from Home Fund was set up in early 2022 to encourage holiday and second homeowners to give the equivalent of a week’s rental income to the local communities where their properties are located. Claire Logan Stephens, said: I, like many holiday homeowners, have a deep affection for Cumbria and I really want to help the local communities to thrive. I feel fortunate to own a holiday home in Troutbeck and giving a week’s rent back to help local causes feels like the right thing to do. “This fund provides an easy and transparent way to make a difference and will further enhance the county’s reputation for promoting responsible and ethical tourism.” Lunesdale Hall, in Kirkby Lonsdale, received a grant from the Home from Home Fund to help pay for a new kitchen. During the pandemic, Lunesdale Hall began running a community cupboard, providing food to people in need and hosting regular community lunches. However, Michael Burchnall, Deputy Chair and Secretary of Lunesdale Hall committee, said the kitchen was not suitable for preparing food for large numbers of people. We wanted to host it in the Lunesdale Hall and prepare the food in the hall, but it was impossible for the numbers involved so we’ve been having to prepare the food elsewhere. Michael said an upgrade of the kitchen would help solve this problem. It will also provide facilities to cater for a growing number of enquiries from people who want to book the hall for weddings or other events and encourage community gatherings.
