ECO-I North West - Opening up the expertise, equipment and resource of the region’s leading universities
Company Profile Proctor Process Plant Ltd is a family-owned business which has gained worldwide respect for their ability to provide industrial combustion equipment solutions to the process industries. They design and manufacture a complete range of industrial burner and heater systems, employing direct, indirect, infra-red and tube firing technology, in addition to supplying associated controls, instrumentation and ancillary equipment. The Project Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are one of the main pollutants generated by human activity, and contribute to the formation of smog, acid rain and affects the tropospheric ozone. This project aims to reduce the NOx and carbon emissions of industrial combustors by developing and testing innovative redesign solutions. This development will make use of high- performance computing-enhanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and combustion chemistry. The development will also undergo thorough experimental testing for cross-validation purposes. The first stage of this project will focus on reducing NOx and controlling CO emission using conventional carbon-based fuels. The second stage aims at dramatically reducing carbon emission by using hydrogen as fuel. Andrea Ortolani Andrea graduated in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, specialising in Turbomachinery, with a graduation thesis resulting in two peer-reviewed conference papers and a journal article. Before starting his PhD, Andrea was a Project Associate working on the prediction of power losses of operational utility-scale wind turbines due to blade erosion.
