ECO-I North West - Opening up the expertise, equipment and resource of the region’s leading universities

Company Profile Ecospheric Ltd is a sustainability consultancy and property development company based at Lymm Hall. They specialise in the retrofit and design of exemplar Passivhaus and low carbon buildings, for which many are of a “hard to treat” variety. The delivery of these pioneering eco-developments progress the field of sustainable construction, save carbon and drive change. The Project The UK currently has 8 million “hard to treat” homes built prior to 1930, with a need to reduce their operational carbon by 80%, providing an exceptional retrofit challenge. This project will study the application of lime-based technologies in the restoration of a historic grade II listed building as an environmentally sustainable alternative to modern construction methods, which utilise cementitious mortars that are carbon intensive and cause moisture retention issues. Using modern technologies/additives to formulate, test and monitor lime products, this study will contribute to a wider understanding of the benefits and applications of lime, including carbon savings over alternative materials. Luke Dickens Luke is a Physics graduate from Manchester, with a subsequent MSc in the Sustainability and Adaption in the Built Environment from the Centre for Alternative Technology. He is passionate in utilising his current experience and knowledge to make the built environment more sustainable by mitigating and adapting to climate change.
