ECO-I North West - Opening up the expertise, equipment and resource of the region’s leading universities

Company Profile HITAS formulations constantly aims to find innovative solutions to industry led challenges found within the Horticultural and Turfgrass sectors. HITAS operates a continuous in-house green product development programme which has taken ideas from feasibility stage through to market successfully. The in-house product development programme includes raw material sourcing, product formulation screening, efficiency and plant safety testing, application and dose rate response, tank mix compatibility, product laboratory evaluation, product field evaluation and end-user evaluation. The Project It has been estimated that over 6 million tonnes of food are wasted each year in the UK. This extreme example of waste is not only a source of unnecessary GHG emissions from various sources across the industry but is also a dire waste of complex natural substances. This waste can take the form of wasted plant material which usually ends up as animal feed or in some cases, biofuel. This project aims to utilise this waste stream by formulating novel, green pesticides from extracts of various sources of food and agricultural waste. Not only utilising an awful example of industry waste, these plant extracts and essential oils have the potential to be effective agents in combatting the growing threat of Anti- Microbial Resistance. Joshua Brett Joshua has completed a biochemistry degree, has taught chemistry in a secondary school and has completed a Masters (MSc) degree in Crop improvement. Joshua's interests include integrated pest management, sustainable agricultural practices, conservation agriculture, crop protection and the future of global food security.
