Kendal Futures - Kendal Vision Opportunity Sites

50 KENDAL VISION | OPPORTUNITY SITES Listed Buildings Conservation Area Scheduled Monument Heritage The site lies on the edge of the Town Centre Conservation Area, which extends along the eastern boundary of the County Wall and incorporates the historic buildings fronting Stricklandgate. Several of these buildings (including County Hall) are listed, reflecting their architectural and historic significance, and any future development will need to respond sensitively to this heritage setting. Ownership Westmorland and Furness Council currently occupies much of the site, including the County Hall building—now vacated—and the associated car parking that extends to the riverside. To the north, on either side of Busher Walk, the land is also in council ownership. The area to the east is occupied by the blue-light facilities, while the plots extending towards Stricklandgate is more fragmented, with multiple ownerships. The blue-light facilities have been engaged as part of this study and while their current buildings perform well, there is recognition that they would benefit from purpose built, modern premises, located on the outskirts of the town. New premises would reduce maintenance liabilities and enable them to host larger numbers of staff and vehicles. Partner based counter facilities could be provided in the town centre for public access. The Mountain Rescue HQ, while well suited to their existing location, particularly for volunteer access, recognise the potential benefits of also relocating to a blue-light hub.
