23 A Pentland Centre Research & Impact Digest, 2025 Time to SIME! The Centre for Scholarship and Innovation in Management Education (SIME) launched in 2023. It is a community of more than 50 scholars and Professional Services staff with a mission to create a dynamic, collaborative, and interdisciplinary space to explore the future of teaching and scholarship. The Centre leads LUMS’ Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) engagement, intensifying our commitment to sustainability and regeneration. Our members’ contributions, as featured in the Scholarship Matters journal, highlight the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals into our curriculum and emphasise the crucial role of place in students’ experiences. The SIME community aspires to become a beacon of institutional excellence by driving curriculum transformation that prioritises graduate attributes such as inclusion, sustainability, and global citizenship. Our goal is to empower students to excel in their future careers and actively address the world’s emerging challenges. Sustainability Gains Ground in Business Education Accreditations and Rankings In the past decade, sustainability has transitioned from a peripheral topic to a central element of business education, reflected in accreditation standards and ranking bodies’ metrics. As more schools seek accreditation, the number of institutions focused on sustainability is increasing. Accreditation Bodies Advocating for Change The ‘Triple Crown’ accrediting bodies – AACSB, EFMD and the Association of MBAs (AMBA) – continually refine their standards to reflect themes of sustainability, ethics, and social impact and responsibility. Schools must show how they incorporate these concepts and how their actions are driven by a clear strategy. EFMD accreditation includes the cross-cutting theme of ethics, responsibility and sustainability, while AACSB places particular emphasis on a school’s ability to strategically plan and deliver societal impact. The AMBA criterion set out an expectation that students will leave programmes equipped with skills to enable them to have a positive impact on society through sustainable and responsible business practices. LUMS is also a signatory of Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME). PRME is an initiative supported by the United Nations that guides business schools in integrating sustainability and responsibility into their curricula. This shift aligns with the broader global trend of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into activities. As future business leaders are being trained, there is a clear expectation that they will understand and implement sustainable practices. LUMS recently maintained its Triple Crown status by demonstrating clear alignment to sustainability requirements. The School is regularly commended on the strength of its culture and sense of common purpose in achieving these aims. Rankings Reflecting New Priorities Around 15 years ago, two of the most influential rankings organisations, the Financial Times (FT) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), began to include sustainability measures in their rankings. This was part of a broader initiative to evaluate universities on their contributions to solving global challenges. These elements have become increasingly important. Although no methodology is perfect, ranking performance has the potential to show schools areas for improvement. They also compel schools to innovate and integrate sustainable practices into their programmes. These rankings serve as a guide for prospective students who are increasingly conscious of the impact of their education on the planet and society. As the climate crisis intensifies and social inequalities become more pronounced, the focus on sustainability in business education is expected to grow even stronger. This trend is not just about keeping pace with global developments; it is about setting the standards for what responsible business education should involve. https://pod.co/transforming-tomorrow/rankingbusiness-schools Listen...
