With the progress of deep learning algorithms and the enhancement of computational power, Artificial Intelligence can generate highly realistic images and artworks. Products like OpenAI’s DALL-E3, Adobe’s Firefly, and MidJourney demonstrate the immense potential of AI in image generation. These technologies are not only capable of creating high-resolution images from scratch but also of performing complex tasks such as image restoration and style transfer. The development of AI image generation technology not only provides new tools and inspiration for artistic creation, but also drives transformation within the creative industry. The application of AI technology in the field of art is becoming increasingly widespread, gradually altering traditional methods of artistic creation. AI image generation tools enable artists and even the general public to create complex and creative images from textual descriptions. These tools not only save time but also offer artists unlimited possibilities. For instance, the Paris art collective ‘Obvious’ created a portrait using AI, which sold for $432,000 at Christie’s. The Museum of Modern Art in New York has also begun to accept AI-generated artworks. In our ongoing research, multiple artists have expressed their excitement about AI’s potential in artistic creation, believing it can provide new creative materials and inspiration, enhancing the level of art and improving creative efficiency. Leonardo, an artist from Italy, mentioned in an interview that he habitually records his inspirations and uses AI tools to experiment with these ideas or gain inspiration. Another artist, Anthony, from Morecambe, has used AI to create a remarkable collection of artworks for his fictional character Antonia Pageta, which was exhibited at Morecambe Library. This trend of cross-disciplinary integration not only broadens forms of artistic expression but also injects new vitality into the development of art. A MATTER OF TRUST However, the application of AI in art raises a series of ethical and legal issues that require in-depth consideration and discussion. Firstly, there is the issue of authenticity and trust. How should the authenticity of AI-generated artworks be defined? In traditional art, the authenticity and uniqueness of a piece are often closely related to the artist’s creative process and personality. Although AI-generated artworks can achieve a highly realistic effect, our research, which established an Image Bank containing works by human artists and AI-generated art, indicates that the average accuracy rate of identifying the authenticity of these works is 61.2% among artists, and only 44.6% among the general public. This raises concerns that the proliferation of AI-generated artworks may make forgery and fraud easier, making the credibility of these works a significant issue. Secondly, copyright issues pose a major challenge for AI art. In traditional art, copyright ownership is usually clear, with the artist holding the rights to their work. However, AI-generated works 44 |
