DuoDay brings together disabled people, supported employment agencies and employers to promote equal employment opportunities across Europe. It promotes the positive contribution disabled people make at work by matching disabled jobseekers with employers – enabling the people to learn about their job role. We then hope that the jobseeker will get ongoing support to move onto training, education, paid work or supported employment. On 18 November 2021, SUSE hosted our 3rd DuoDay and our theme was Play Your Part. We worked with our members and colleagues to address the Disability Employment Gap by developing relationships with employers and highlighting the contribution disabled people make to Scotland’s businesses and economy. This year we were absolutely thrilled to have been able to bring together over 20 job shadowing opportunities working with a range of employers including Morrisons, Farmfoods, Premier Inn, Citizens Advice Bureau and Maxim Scotland. 18 November 2021 Our theme for 2021: Play Your Part Our Duos
Images from DuoDay Ryan shadowed Sally at Belville Community Gardens – he helped to collect food deliveries from local supermarkets to distribute to people in need in Inverclyde. Michelle shadowed Katherine and Ruth at Maxim Park – she gained experience completing invoices and an insight into the day-to-day running of Maxim Park. Michelle also had the opportunity to learn how Maxim Park run their website and social media channels. Mark joined the team at Transitions Stirling for a day of shadowing – he helped the Transitions volunteers with the Community Food Project, Reboot Project, Reuse Hub and the Tool Library. Mark enjoyed his experience so much that he has decided to apply to volunteer with the project.
Images from DuoDay Jack spent DuoDay job shadowing at the Muir Hub, the community hub in Muir of Ord in the Highlands. Jack’s responsibilities included setting up the tai chi session and craft group, as well as greeting all the attendees upon arrival. Fraser had an amazing day job shadowing with The Premier Inn in Edinburgh. Fraser spend the day helping out in housekeeping, hospitality and reception, but that’s not all…… the team at the Premier Inn recognised the hard work that Fraser put in, and they rounded off the day by offering him a part time position which Fraser was absolutely delighted to accept!
With thanks to None of this would have been possible without the help and support of our partners and colleagues at Enable Works and Fedcap Scotland who got fully behind supporting us in creating these job shadowing opportunities. We would also like to extend a big thank you to our funders for Duoday 2021 The Edward Gosling Foundation and Souter Charitable Trust. Their contributions helped make the day a great success.
