Six generations of care At S. Stibbards & Sons we pride ourselves on six generations of experience helping to arrange funerals in the local community. Our duty now remains the same as it was when the company began – to provide respectful and personal assistance in fulfilling the wishes of our clients and their loved ones. 03 03 Samuel Stibbards, the company’s founder, first trained as a wheelwright and carpenter but also gave legal advice to those in need. At the time it was common for local tradesmen to ‘undertake’ funeral arrangements in the community and Samuel was one of the tradesmen who did this. Over time the undertaking business grew and Samuel decided to turn his full attention to it, establishing S. Stibbards & Sons Ltd Funeral Directors in 1867. The company has always been based at New Road Corner, with the premises expanding and adapting over time to meet the changing needs of the company. In 1925 David and Albert, the sons of Samuel and his Wife Ann, took over the company. The brothers began the expansion of the business, appointing trusted agents in the local community to arrange funerals on the company’s behalf. Since then much has changed in the company’s structure, but S. Stibbards & Sons is still owned and run by direct descendants of Samuel Stibbards. We now have seven branches: the head office in Hadleigh, Leigh-on-Sea, Canvey Island, Shoeburyness, Hockley, Southend and Benfleet. We continue to provide care and support to our clients during a difficult time and exercise the utmost professionalism in helping them arrange a fitting tribute to their loved ones.
Initial decisions There are many choices you will have to make when arranging a funeral and the early decisions are some of the most important. Our funeral arrangers will talk you through all of your options and support you by taking care of all of the practical arrangements. 04 05 Place of rest – Burial or Cremation One of the first decisions you will have to make will be that of burial or cremation. This is a very personal choice and may be determined by family tradition, religious beliefs or the wishes of the deceased. Once you know what type of funeral it will be, you will then need to decide on the place of committal – where the deceased will be laid to rest. Burial Burials commonly take place in a churchyard or cemetery. Churchyards refer to burial sites in church grounds and usually have restrictions on who can be buried there. Many cemeteries accept both religious and non-religious burials, although some are reserved exclusively for a single faith. Your funeral arranger will be able to advise you on the suitability of each of the burial grounds in the local area. If the deceased is to be buried in a new grave, we can assist you with locating and purchasing a new plot, and any requests you have to purchase adjacent plots. If there is already a grave (this is often as part of a family plot), we can assist you in finding out if there is space for a further burial and arranging for the deceased to be buried there. Woodland burials A local woodland burial allows the deceased to rest in peace in the natural surroundings of flora and fauna. Cremation All local crematoria have gardens of remembrance, where ashes can be laid to rest in peace and tranquillity. You will be able to choose from various forms of memorial at the crematorium, such as an entry in a book of remembrance or a miniature headstone. Most local burial grounds have an area set aside for the interment of cremated remains. They usually permit a memorial to your loved one, with most preferring the cremated remains to be interred in some form of vessel. (Please see p.34 for details) Alternatively, you might wish to have the cremated remains returned to you as a personal remembrance. We can make the necessary arrangements for this, as well as offering a wide selection of caskets and urns. Initial decisions Initial decisions – Place of rest
The service venue Crematorium or Cemetery Chapel Most crematoria have facilities where you can hold the funeral service at the same place as the committal. In this case, we can assist you in making the personal arrangements for the service and committal. Alternatively, you might wish to have the service at another location (possibly a religious venue) with a shorter committal service at the crematorium or cemetery. Other venues Some people prefer to hold the funeral service at an alternative venue of personal choice, before moving on to the final place of rest. Your funeral arranger will be happy to explain the choices that are open to you. Church If the deceased was Christian, then you may want to arrange a religious service at a church. This might be a church that the deceased attended or a church where the family has traditionally honoured the lives of their loved ones. Some churches will have a churchyard, so that you can hold the service and committal at the same location. In other cases, the coffin will need to be conveyed between the service and the final place of rest. Other religious venues We have experience of arranging funerals for all religions and can suggest appropriate service venues for all beliefs, as well as liasing with the venue to make practical arrangements. The funeral service is an opportunity for those who knew the deceased to gather together and celebrate the life of their loved one. Religious beliefs, traditions and the type of committal, among other factors, can influence where the funeral service is held. In all cases we can discuss the options available to you and help you match your wishes to a suitable venue, as well as liasing with the venue to make arrangements for the conveyance of the deceased. 06 Initial decisions – The service venue Initial decisions The Ceremony Planning the funeral service to reflect the life of a loved one can seem a daunting task. Our experienced staff are here to listen to your wishes and then guide and support you through the entire process.
The ceremony Early on in the arrangement, you will have to decide upon the type of funeral service you wish to have in memory of the deceased. This will often have an impact on your choice of venue for the service and the final place of rest. Our experienced funeral arrangers can advise you on all types of funeral service and how your choice of service might influence other aspects of the funeral. Funeral celebrant There are a number of celebrants within the local area who will be able to provide a personal service based on your requirements. Some of these celebrants have religious training and are therefore able to combine religious aspects, such as hymns and prayers, with some of the more personal aspects the family desires. Humanist There are no religious aspects to a humanist funeral service, focusing rather on paying tribute to the life and memory of the deceased. However, this does not mean that there should be anything in a humanist funeral service to offend the religious; a humanist service is simply an affectionate celebration of life. Religious Different religions mark the passing of life with different forms of service. A Christian service celebrates the life of the deceased and their entrance into a new eternal life, and will usually include hymns, readings and prayer in remembrance of the loved one. Other religions recognise the passing of life with their own unique ceremonies and rituals according to the rules and traditions of the religion. Your religious leader will be able to advise you on the composition of an appropriate service in honour of your loved one. We will observe all religious and cultural beliefs and assist you in arranging the other elements of the funeral to fit with your religious service. Music At the service Hymns and classical music have traditionally provided the musical accompaniment to the funeral service. While these remain popular, more and more people are now being remembered with their favourite pop songs, songs from musicals or even music recorded by family and friends. All local crematoria now have the facilities to download music of your choice and play it during the service, in addition to the option to provide an organist. If the funeral is being held at a burial chapel or church, we can arrange for someone to play the organ at the service. We can also provide a choral accompaniment for crematorium services. Soloists – from £85 We know a number of professional soloists who will perform at funeral services. Some prefer to sing classical music or hymns, while others offer a much wider selection. Whatever your wishes, we will endeavour to fulfil them. Bagpipes – from £150 Having a piper to lead or play at the funeral service can be very dramatic and is steeped in tradition and symbolism. Bands – POA Whether you are looking for a New Orleans jazz band or a string quartet, our funeral arrangers will endeavour to organise this to make the funeral as personal as possible. A personal tribute Visual Tributes Many crematoria now have the facility to play video or photo tributes as part of the funeral service, it is said ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ and when accompanied with a favourite music track a visual tribute is an excellent way to portray a snapshot of your loved ones life. *Fees correct as of 1st January 2022 Southend Crematorium Single photo shown throughout from £15* Simple slide show (25 photos) from £50* Tribute photo presentation with music (25 photos) from £85* Additional photos (price per 25 photos) £15 Family supplied video checking from £20* Basildon Crematorium Single photo from £20* Tribute photo presentation (10 photos) from £60* Tribute photo presentation (20 photos) from £65* Additional photos (price per photo) £1.50 Video tribute (up to 3 minutes) from £40* Additional 3 minutes £15 Webcasting and recording of services Personal attendance will always be the first choice but for those unable to attend, a webcast or recording of the service at least provides the opportunity to watch the event. The webcast enables anyone in the world to watch the funeral live in full-screen video, without the need for any technical knowledge or special software. Southend Crematorium Basildon Crematorium Webcast from £60.00* from £76* DVD/USB recording from £70.00* from £60* Bearing the coffin Carrying the coffin of a loved one can be a very poignant last act for family and friends of the deceased. We are able to assist you with this final tribute and will give those wishing to carry the coffin instructions and assistance on the day. In order to keep everyone safe and prevent accidents or injury, we respectfully requested that the following guidelines are adhered to: ● All those helping to carry the coffin should be over 18 years of age ● They should be fit and healthy and not suffer from any condition that may be exacerbated by lifting. ● Sensible footwear should be worn - no high heels ● We require 6 bearers in all instances Each limousine can carry a party of six, which may be comprised of adults, children and babies. For reasons of safety, children and babies are not permitted to travel on adults’ laps. Please inform your funeral arranger as soon as possible if children or babies are to travel in the limousine; we can then allow extra time at the house for the child’s parents to fit any travel aids. If you plan for children to travel in the limousine as part of the funeral party, we respectfully ask that you read the following notes for guidance. Third Party Fees There are a number of fees that are paid to external authorities on your behalf. These are known as Third Party or Disbursement Fees. These fees are not set by us and we will always endeavour to ensure that we estimate these fees correctly. These fees will be listed on your estimate and it is respectfully asked that they are paid within 5 days of the arrangements being made. As part of our service to you we request one payment to ourselves, either by cash, cheque or debit or credit card, and we will then pay these fees to the authorities. Below is a guide to the fees that may need to be paid, although it is not exhaustive. Crematorium fees Fees payable to the crematorium generally include the use of the chapel for the service to take place, an organist (if applicable) or music system to accompany any hymns that you may wish to sing and, locally, use of the downloadable Wesley Music System for the playing of personal music. The fee also includes the cremation service itself and care of the cremated remains for up to one month after the service has taken place. If the ashes are to be interred in the Garden of Remembrance at the crematorium this usually forms part of the cremation fee, but any form of memorial will be a separate fee. Doctors’ fees If the service is to be a cremation and no Post-Mortem has taken place, statutory Medical Cremation Certificates will need to be completed to allow the cremation to take place. The certificate is composed of two sections, the first being completed by the doctor who last looked after the deceased. The second part is then completed by an independent GP or doctor at the hospital who does not work with the first doctor. Burial fees Whether there is an existing grave or a new grave is to be purchased, there will be fees payable for the preparation and purchase of the grave to the presiding burial authority. If a new grave is required, the fee paid is for the right of burial, not the actual land in which the plot is situated; this remains the property of the burial authority. It is worth noting that if you live outside the area of your chosen cemetery, there may be an additional ‘non-resident’ fee to be paid. Officiant fees The majority of families prefer to have a professional lead the service on their behalf. This may be a Minister of Religion, a Funeral Celebrant or a Humanist officiant. Their fee will include their travelling expenses and the time taken to lead the service on your behalf. They will also want to meet with you to discuss the service details and advise on music choices, and will liaise with us on your behalf to provide the written content for any order of service. Other third party fees There are a number of other fees that may be payable dependent on your selected arrangements. A description of many of these may be found later in the brochure with their respective fees. If you are unsure if any fee may apply to your arrangements, please do not hesitate to ask us for further clarification. 14 Disbursements Initial decisions – Third party fees Initial decisions – Our professional fees 15 • Newspaper notices • Church fees • Dove release • Specialist vehicles for transportation • Removal of the memorial for preparation of a grave • The interment of the cremated remains in a dedicated grave space • Repatriation and consular fees • Funeral flowers £. . . . . . . . . . . . £. . . . . . . . . . . . £. . . . . . . . . . . . £. . . . . . . . . . . . Chapel of Rest 22 Care of the deceased – Chapel of rest Chapel of rest The chapel of rest is a quiet, dignified environment in which friends and family can pay their last respects to their loved one. Each of our offices has its own private chapel of rest. In order to make your visit as peaceful as possible, appointments need to be made and the following guidance should be noted. Once funeral arrangements have been made and confirmed, we suggest that at least three working days should be left before families make appointments at the chapel of rest. This gives time for the completion of paperwork, the preparation of the coffin and the care of the deceased. Please be aware that three days is only a guide and on occasion may have to be extended depending on individual circumstances.
