Chapel of Rest 22 Care of the deceased – Chapel of rest Chapel of rest The chapel of rest is a quiet, dignified environment in which friends and family can pay their last respects to their loved one. Each of our offices has its own private chapel of rest. In order to make your visit as peaceful as possible, appointments need to be made and the following guidance should be noted. Once funeral arrangements have been made and confirmed, we suggest that at least three working days should be left before families make appointments at the chapel of rest. This gives time for the completion of paperwork, the preparation of the coffin and the care of the deceased. Please be aware that three days is only a guide and on occasion may have to be extended depending on individual circumstances. Booking an appointment: Appointments for visits to the chapel of rest should be made through the office where the funeral has been arranged, during normal office hours. Appointment hours: Monday – Friday 10:00am – 4:00pm Visits to the chapel of rest last for half an hour. If you feel that your family requires longer than this, please let us know when arranging your visit. Out of hours visitation: We understand that not everyone is able to visit the chapel of rest during normal office hours, so we are able to offer a limited number of out of hours appointments to all our chapels of rest upon request and subject to availability. (Excludes direct cremation and Medway packages) N.B. We will always try to accommodate any specific requests but these cannot be guaranteed. Please consult with your arranger for any special requests, such as extended visitation periods. The following offices have Chapels of Rest:- Hadleigh Canvey Island Leigh-on-Sea Hockley Southend Shoeburyness Funeral Dress Supplying Own Clothes • The clothes that the deceased would normally wear, including underwear • A recent photograph for the setting of hair styles • Their favourite aftershave or perfume • Shoes (these may be worn for visitation but will be removed if the service is to be a cremation) • Glasses and costume jewellery (glasses & some jewellery will need to be removed for cremation) N.B. Please be very clear with us if you wish for any items of clothing to be returned to you. Unless specifically stated all items with the deceased on the day of the funeral will be left with them for the committal, if allowed by cremation law. Bringing items in to be placed in the coffin We welcome you to bring items in to be placed with your loved on and remain with them. If the service is to be a burial there is very little restriction as to what can be placed in the coffin. If the service is to be a cremation however there are a number of restricted items, such as glass, batteries, some metals and plastics. If you have any items that you are not sure about, please talk to us and we will advise you accordingly. As an alternative small items, such as jewellery, can be reunited with the ashes of your loved one after the service. Returning personal Items & clothing For your safety and that of our colleagues, we are unable to return soiled personal items and clothing, any items that you request to be returned, must be collected from our office before the day of the funeral. Unreturned shoes & glasses Any shoes, glasses or other items which are removed before the cremation and not returned to the family are donated to our local Lions & HARP charities for use in the third world and for the homeless. We encourage you to supply clothes for your loved one to be dressed in whilst they are in our care and for the funeral. We respectfully ask that all clothes are supplied to us within 72 hrs of the arrangements being made, so that any visitation that you require can take place as soon as possible. As a general rule we will need the following items:- Care of the Deceased Your loved one and their care is central to all that we do. We want you to be reassured that whilst in our care they will be well looked after and every effort will be made to ensure that they rest well until the time of the funeral. We recommend that embalming should take place and this service is included in all our ‘select’ funeral arrangements. We encourage you to provide clothes for your loved on to be dressed in and respectfully ask that these are provided to us within 3 days of making the arrangements. ● If you prefer we can provide a gown for your loved one to be dressed in, please see below.
