School of Landscape Painting - Artsist Development Programme 2020/21

This is landscape drawing in the heart of the South Downs National Park using charcoal. As a drawing medium, charcoal is capable of expressing a great range of marks – from very delicate modulations of tonal values, through to broad and dramatic marks that convey extraordinary power and conviction. It is my intention to set in place a series of technical ideas connected with charcoal, as well as intellectual tools that you can later use in your own work. Objective observation and basic drawing principles will form the basis for a more individual interpretation. We can work directly on the Downs and woodlands at our doorstep.
