The programme begins with a dedicated study day at Tate Britain, exploring the history and development of landscape painting. School of Landscape Painting Individual Artist Tutorials London Gallery Study Day ELEMENT Study, observation and historical context Tate Britain 3 September 2026 | 11:30am - 4pm The day includes a visit to view landscape drawings and studies in the Tate archive and Print Room, alongside a talk and discussion: Landscape & Revolution in Western Painting The study day provides an opportunity to engage closely with the history of landscape painting and consider the different ways artists have responded to landscape, place and the world around them. Landscape Studio Residency in Wales The heart of the programme is a 14-day studio residency in St Davids, Pembrokeshire. Housed in a beautifully converted former school overlooking the Cathedral Valley, with the Pembrokeshire coast beyond, the studio provides dedicated space and time for painting, research and reflection. St Davids, Pembrokeshire 9–23 January 2027 The residency includes: 14 days of studio practice Two extended formal tutorials Informal discussion and feedback Short daily talks on Modes of Working Two formal evening talks Working spaces and kitchen facilities The surrounding landscape is close and immediate, providing an opportunity for sustained engagement with the place in which you are working. Private Individual Tutorials Four individual tutorials take place across the year, each lasting up to 1 hour 30 minutes. These sessions provide a supportive touchpoint for the continued development of each artist's work, offering space for focused discussion, reflection and feedback. OTHER COURSES Studio Printing Workshop Christopher Baker will provide guidance throughout, sharing ideas on technique, process and the expressive possibilities of printmaking. The workshop takes place at Christopher's studio near Arundel, West Sussex, with access to two large presses and plates in a range of sizes. Working with a press, participants will explore methods and approaches to producing a suite of quality prints, considering how the medium can extend and inform their own practice and subject matter. Exploring the expressive potential of monotype printing with CHRISTOPHER W BAKER
School of Landscape Pain Christopher Christopher Baker has wide experience of both North American and European traditions of landscape painting. He has travelled extensively to study and paint, from the High Arctic and Antarctic Peninsula to the landscapes of his own locality, as explored in 64 Days. Drawing on this primary research, he has created large bodies of thematic work exhibited at the Royal Academy, London; Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada; and Pallant House Gallery, Chichester. Christopher has a strong belief in an intimate connection with nature and in the capacity of art, at its best, to express our ability to experience what lies both beyond us and within us. Drawing on this vision and experience, he works with artists through the School of Landscape Painting to help them structure and develop an individual programme of artistic development.
