Traveller's Guide to the South and Central Lakes
golakestravel.co.uk 45 Make a splash Coniston Village nestles between the imposing ‘Old Man’ and the tranquil shores of Coniston Water, the ideal location for outdoor adventures. If you’d really like to explore Coniston Water you can hire a canoe, rowing boat or motor boat from Coniston Boating Centre, right on the edge of the lake. You can catch the regular road train down to the lake shore or take the short walk from the village centre, following signs for The Lake. Paddle to Peel Island (thought to be the setting for ‘Wild Cat Island’ in Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons) and enjoy a picnic and a dip before heading back - look out for pirates. For something a little more extreme try Waterwalkers, giant plastic globes which allow you to walk on water. These are available at weekends subject to weather conditions. If you prefer two wheels hire a bike and explore one of the family friendly cycle trails. The Coniston Launch offers a more laid back pace; their special interest cruises give you a taste of Coniston’s history and can really keep the kids amused. On the Swallows and Amazons tour, you can discover a secret harbour on Wild Cat Island or some of the locations Arthur Ransome used in his famous children’s books. The National Trust’s Steam Yacht Gondola also offers regular cruises around the lake. This restored Victorian steam-powered yacht takes you back to the golden age of travel and is a great way to access easy family walking on the lake shore. If you want to see the countryside at closer quarters what better way than on horseback taking in Torver Common and the Coniston Fells. Rides can be booked for one hour or up to a full day from Crook Barn Stables. All abilities are catered for – from beginners to experienced riders.
