46 Donald took on his father’s record breaking legacy and broke eight world speed records on water and on land in the 1950s and 60s. He was a familiar face in Coniston as he set many of his records on the lake. He tragically died whilst attempting a water speed record on Coniston Water in 1967 in his Bluebird K7. The boat was recovered from the lake by the Bluebird Project in 2000-2001 and Donald Campbell was buried in the nearby Coniston Cemetery. Another side of Coniston is its foodie heritage. There are many specialist farmers locally and with so much gorgeous local produce and traditional dishes to try, you can sample the best right on your doorstep. Coniston also has its very own brewery. Be sure to try Coniston Brewing Company’s most popular pints of Bluebird Bitter and Old Man Ale. Enjoy… Day Out 2 An Inspirational Landscape Famous philanthropist, painter and art critic John Ruskin lived in the stunningly situated Brantwood. Nestled on the shore of Coniston Water, Brantwood houses Ruskin’s treasures, including art, furniture and personal memorabilia. The house and gardens are open all year to the public. Wander at your leisure to get a real feel for the man himself. The property also boasts unique and beautiful mountainside gardens. The most inspiring way to arrive at Brantwood is by the Coniston Launch or Steam Yacht Gondola. Both run from April to October. Ruskin’s former secretary set up a museum in 1901 as a memorial to Ruskin and a celebration of the area’s heritage. The Ruskin Museum is located just outside the centre of Coniston village and is well worth a visit. There are interesting exhibits relating to the area’s heritage including copper mines, slate, geology, lace and farming.
