Traveller's Guide to the South and Central Lakes
50 Hawkshead In the heart of the South and Central Lakes lies Hawkshead. Its cobbled streets and clusters of whitewashed cottages huddled around secluded courtyards give the village a sense of intimacy that is rarely found elsewhere in the Lake District. With quirky shops, ancient coaching inns and cosy tea rooms, Hawkshead has everything for an unhurried afternoon sojourn. Beatrix Potter was particularly fond of Hawkshead, having spent holidays in the area with her parents. In 1905 she bought Hill Top Farm at Near Sawrey on the proceeds from her recently published book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
