Traveller's Guide to the South and Central Lakes

52 Hop, Skip & Jump Your Way Discover the life and work of Beatrix Potter - conservationist, farmer and author - in the Beatrix Potter Gallery. Set in the village centre this 17th century building is where Beatrix Potter’s husband, William Heelis, ran his solicitor’s practice. Now a gallery and museum it hosts many of her original watercolours and changing exhibitions. Immerse yourself further in her world by visiting Hill Top, the 17th century farmhouse, which provided the inspiration for 13 of her books. Owned by the National Trust, it remains much the same as when she lived here. There is an admission charge, timed entry system (to avoid overcrowding) and a very small car park, so your best bet is to hop on the X30 Cross Lakes Experience service from Hawkshead. The Cross Lakes Experience seasonal service is a great way to explore the area further. One branch of the service links to Grizedale Forest and Wray Castle. Grizedale Forest has an excellent visitor centre and café. Monkey around at Go Ape! on the aerial adventure course. With a 275 metre long zip wire, it’s the perfect venue for kids (10+) and adventurous adults. The course is open daily from late March to late October. Try out the brand new Zip Trekking Adventure, a network of seven tandem zip lines that traverse Grizedale Forest. Fly through the air on the longest series of zip wires anywhere in the UK, through one of the most beautiful, dramatic forests, over a total distance of 3km for two exhilarating hours. This is an experience you’ll never forget. Day Out 1 Tower Bank Arms featured in Beatrix Potter’s books Hawkshead Bike hire Hire: You can hire bikes from Grizedale Mountain Bikes and Hawkshead YHA.
