Traveller's Guide to the South and Central Lakes

golakestravel.co.uk 53 The Cross Lakes Experience is a seasonal service which offers easy access to walks and activities in Grizedale Forest or to Wray Castle. For timetable information, call 015394 45161. Now owned by the National Trust, Wray Castle is an imposing mock Gothic castle. The castle was built by James Dawson in the 1840s, using money from his wife’s inheritance. Beatrix Potter stayed here in 1882 whilst on holiday with her parents. It is not a typical National Trust house full of paintings, furniture and antiques with an accompanying owner-family history. What you will see is a faded yet fascinating building with hints of its grand past and plenty of signs of its varied history. Make sure you join one of the National Trust’s free tours to get its full life story. Day Out 2 Amble Through the Rich Heritage Wander around Hawkshead with its beautiful old buildings, churches, and rich history. Here you will find important connections to the poet William Wordsworth and children’s author Beatrix Potter. William Wordsworth was educated in Hawkshead old grammar school which is open to the public from April-November. Beatrix Potter lived at the nearby Hill Top Farm, marrying William Heelis, a local solicitor, in the early 20th century. When you have finished exploring the quirky village and its abundance of artisan shops, settle down to a delicious afternoon tea in one of the many cafés and tea-rooms, or sample some local ale and quality ‘pub grub’ in one of the village inns. After lunch explore a little further afield. With a huge choice of public footpaths and quiet lanes it is easy to leave the crowds behind and immerse yourself in the beautiful countryside around Hawkshead. Hawkshead is halfway between the lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water and lies to the north of its own lake – Esthwaite Water. Hawkshead Wray Castle Hawkshead Windermere’s western shore
