11 Blue Evolution Seaweed Farms Project contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) SDG 2 – Zero Hunger Covering 71% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean currently contributes only 2% to the world’s food supply, currently an untapped global food resource. SDG 3 – Good Health &Well-Being Seaweed research is focusing on the poten- tial medicinal applications and its uses as a specific dietary supplement. SDG 8 – Decent Work & Economic Growth Development of the industry would create a new source of revenues, supporting emerging economies and their local communities SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption & Production Innovative projects are looking to seaweed extracts as an alternative to single use plas- tics and oil-based adhesives, encouraging plastic reduction. SDG 13 – Climate Action Seaweed production for food and feed could contribute to avoiding land-use change. Seaweeds also naturally sequester carbon and helps to mitigate the effects of ocean acidification. SDG 14 – Life BelowWater Seaweed provides marine ecosystem support by contributing to increased fish habitat and marine biodiversity, as well as ocean restoration. Seaweed has potential to serve as the basis of a new integrated multi-trophic aquaculture with marine life to increase production while decreasing environmental impact.
