8 Our world is polluted with plastic and if we continue on this path, we will have more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050. Petroleum-based plastics are a toxic poison with endocrine disrupting chemicals that are killing people pre-maturely and making them sick, while also disrupting our ecosystems in our oceans and rivers. 9.1 billion tons of plastic have been produced since the 1950’s and the amount of plastic produced each year is roughly the same as the entire weight of humanity. The chemicals in plastics have been shown to cause Infertility, Cancers, Alzheimer, Parkinson’s, Asthma, and many other serious health conditions. Each of us con- sumes one plastic credit card worth of micro-plastics a week and tires produce 2 pounds of micro-plastics per every person on earth every year. So, what can we do to deal with the existing plastic that is going to persist in harming humanity and eco-systems around the world for hundreds of years and begin to replace petrole- um-based toxic plastics with more benign alternatives? Supporting change through Innovation 4.4 inaugural 2021 Ocean Prize The mission of Ocean Funders, an initiative of Inno- vation 4.4, is to enable a more aligned and informed system-based approach to funding oceans solutions. The Innovation 4.4 Ocean Prize catalyses innovation for oceans solutions, by leveraging advanced expertise in Innovation 4.4 Ocean Innovation Prize for Plastic Pollution effective prize incentives for innovation previously con- tributed to building the NASA Centennial Challenges, the Global Entrepreneurship Summit Competition, the SXSW Eco Start-up Competition, the Cleantech Open, the Global Choices Competition, and many other global prizes and innovation challenges. Once the prize is awarded, Innovation 4.4 continues to ensure the solutions selected also have visibility at such global platforms like the World Economic Forum, the UN COP, and global ocean investor summits. Inno- vation 4.4 also ensures selected solutions can access markets by producing ocean technology showcases for corporations and governments seeking specific ocean solutions. The 2021 prize is focused on eliminating plastics from our oceans and other ecosystems by replacing future plastics with better alternatives and cleaning up existing plastic in the ocean in a safe and effective way. With a prize offer of $100,000, participants are invited to focus on Non-petroleum based plastic alternatives, System solutions to address the overall collection and pro- cessing of plastic and Component level solutions that address a specific aspect of plastics within our environ- ment, such as collection only. 93% of all carbon is sequestered and 50-80% of oxygen is produced by our oceans Healthy Oceans are Critical to Human & Ecosystem Health:
