Meeting all the necessary fire safety standards, we offer an extensive range of products for every kind of application, from overhead door closers to concealed door closers, plus hold-open solutions too. No matter the weight or size of a door, we can help. Selecting a door closer • Is it for a fire door? • Power size - what width and weight is the door? • Fitting position - where is it being installed? • What type of closer do you need? Fire doors, standards and legislation The critical function of a door closer on a fire door is ensuring the door fully closes to restrict the spread of the fire and smoke. Fire doors must be fitted with an appropriately CE tested and fire rated door closer. The fire rating must also correspond to the rating for the fire door, i.e. if it is a 60 minute timber fire door, the door closer must be tested to FD60 for timber doors. The correct power size and fitting position must also be selected. Types of door closers Overhead door closers: Designed to fit on the face of a door or frame– our overhead closers are all fully CE marked and fire door tested in all three fitting positions. Concealed door closers: Fitting within the leaf of the door (or frame for Transom fixed), concealed closers are ideal for environments where the closer should not be seen. Great for highly aesthetic and residential doors, as well as where reduced opportunity for vandalism or tampering would be beneficial. Electromagnetic door closers: Linked to the fire alarm system, electromagnetic closers do not close the door in normal function, but as soon as the fire alarm is triggered, the closer engages to shut the door maintaining the integrity of the fire door. Available as either: • Hold-open mode, ideal for high traffic areas or where reduced touchpoints are beneficial as the doors are held back out of the way. • Free-swing where in standard operation, the closer operates as though no closer is fitted, ideal for areas such as care home bedroom doors as minimal force is required to open or close the door. Terminology Power size The strength (torque) of the closer and its ability to offer reliable controlled closing to a particular size of door. Backcheck Slows the opening speed of the door before it gets to 90° to help prevent damage to the door and adjacent walls. Latching action Speed of door leaf in the final closing motion, designed to allow the door to overcome the resistance of a door latch or close without slamming. Outside access devices (OAD) Designed to allow access into a building through an escape door. As an approved accessory they have been tested with the ExiSAFE panic and emergency products to prove that, whilst offering a lockable entry from outside, they do not prevent escape from inside. EN 1125 – push bar panic escape hardware Panic escape hardware is required to cover a minimum of 60% of the door width, making them easy to find and operate during sudden evacuation of a building. By law these devices must be used in public places where occupants of the building are not familiar with the layout and means of escape. EN 179 – push pad emergency exit hardware Push pad operated emergency exit devices can only be used where operators are familiar with hardware and how to use it. Some escape doors are also fire doors, for these it is essential that you use fire tested escape hardware. All ExiSAFE products are fire tested for timber and metal doors. Whenever fitting a latch to a fire door it must be fire door tested and fitted with an appropriate intumescent kit.
