Types of rim locks Nightlatches Most commonly found on home front doors, they automatically lock when the door shuts, and are operated by a key from the outside. Some nightlatches can be double deadlocked from the inside and others from the outside – however these are not recommended for use on a single entry-point properties like apartments or flats, as if the key cannot be located it is possible that residents could be locked inside. Deadlock The bolt can be withdrawn to allow the door to swing free, or projected so that the door is held in the closed position. Sashlock Allows the door to be held in the closed positon by the latch whilst still offering free passage when the lever handle is depressed or the knob is rotated. When the door is closed and the bolt is projected it ensures the door is held in the closed position. Other Some rim locks are also available with a snib for deadlocking or a side bolt to allow the rim lock to be held open (internally). Terminology
