Padlock material Steel is the most common material for security padlocks which are usually hardened or case hardened. Other materials such as brass and aluminium can be used for medium level security applications. Padlock size Generally, the bigger the padlock, the higher the security level which can provide extra protection against attack. External use For outdoor use, it would always be recommended to use corrosion resistant padlocks with either protective covers, finishes or specific material such as stainless steel to resist the elements. Standards Body types Padlocks can either have an open body or they can offer closed protection around the shackle for enhanced security. Closed shackle Open shackle EN12320 EN 12320 classifies padlocks and padlock fittings by using a 7 digit coding system. Each digit refers to a particular feature of the product measured against the standard’s performance requirements. CEN rating is a European harmonised standard with testing requirements in line with EN 12320. Each grade refers to the security grade of the padlock, the higher the grade the higher the security levels.
