6 7 HERITAGE Welsh gold has a legacy that dates back over 2000 years. It is now one of the most sought-after golds in the world, revered for its scarcity and origin. A popular choice with members of the British Royal Family, the pattern of using rare Welsh gold in royal wedding rings has now become tradition. This tradition was started by The Queen Mother, then Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, on her marriage to the Duke of York on 26th April, 1923. Some of this very same rare Welsh gold is contained within each piece of Clogau jewellery, making it some of the most exclusive jewellery in the world. 8 THE STORY BEHIND THE 1854 BLEND The story of Welsh gold began over 500 million years ago. Gold seams were formed deep within the hills, between the quartz and the Clogau shales from seismic activity in the area - now known as Snowdonia, causing the volcanic eruption of Rhobell Fawr. Until 1854, only copper had been mined at Clogau St. David’s, but a chance discovery changed the fortunes of the mine forever, as Mr. Freeman, the mine’s owner, struck gold. Thus began the Welsh gold rush. The beauty of the 1854 blend can be attributed to the unique natural colour that was first discovered from the gold in its raw form, found at the Clogau St. David’s mine. Managing Director Ben Roberts commented, "When I first visited Clogau St. David's, the copper seams interwoven within the gold seams resulted in a pale rose-yellow tone, unlike anything I had ever seen, or have seen since."

28 29 COLOUR CUT A diamond’s colour is measured by how colourless it is. Diamonds are graded from D (colourless and the highest grade) to Z (noticeably coloured). Compose by Clogau diamonds range from colourless to near colourless. We have carefully selected three colour options for you to choose from; D, G and I. Compose by Clogau diamonds are available in two options; classic round Brilliant cut and Princess cut. We ensure all diamonds used in Compose by Clogau rings are cut to ‘good’ proportions and will achieve a wonderful sparkle and brilliance. CLARITY Almost every natural diamond that exists contains naturally occurring imperfections; most of these are very tiny and cannot be seen with the naked eye. They have no visible impact on a diamond’s overall appearance. Diamonds are graded from FL (flawless) to I3 (lowest grade and internally flawed). When composing your ring you can choose from VS1 (very slightly included, Clogau’s best), VS2 (very slightly included) and SI1 (slightly included) diamonds. CARAT WEIGHT The carat refers to the diamond weight and determines the size of the diamond (but not the quality of the diamond). 30 31 METAL CHOICES EXPLAINED 9ct gold has the hallmark 375 which means there is 37.5% pure gold in the alloy. 18ct gold has the hallmark 750 which means it is 75% pure gold. Our platinum has the hallmark 950 which means that there is 95% platinum in the alloy. The remaining percentages are made up of other metals creating an alloy that differs depending on whether it is white, rose or yellow gold and its required properties. All of our Compose by Clogau rings contain a consistent percentage of rare Welsh gold, which is typically found within the rose gold detailing of your ring. Platinum’s natural sheen accentuates the brilliance of a diamond. It is highly dense and very durable. It is not possible to mix gold with plain platinum and so platinum items always have an 18ct Welsh Rose Gold section to ensure that our rare Welsh gold is included in your Compose by Clogau ring. CERTIFICATIONS & GUARANTEES We know how important it is to you that our jewellery is crafted from ethically sourced materials. We want to make sure you understand the value of our assurances regarding your Compose by Clogau engagement and wedding rings. ETHICAL ASSURANCE Clogau guarantees that all of the diamonds set in our Compose by Clogau engagement and wedding rings have been ethically sourced, responsibly crafted, and originate from a conflict-free area. All of our suppliers operate within the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, and it is a condition of sale that written guarantees are provided that the diamonds supplied do not come from other conflict areas. This stringent diamond policy and its certifications are our guarantee that every Compose by Clogau diamond you have chosen is ethically sourced and 100% conflict free. DIAMOND CERTIFICATES All of our Compose by Clogau selected diamonds are GIA® certified. The certificates have been produced by an independent body and they tell us exactly what that diamond is in relation to the 4Cs (details of this below). When you invest in a Compose by Clogau® engagement ring you will receive a report and certificate from the GIA®, which is their assurance of their diamond’s quality. A photograph of the certification on the rings girdle will be stored at Clogau Head Office.
