It costs £60,000 to imprison someone for a year LIBERTY CHOIR 11 10 LIBERTY CHOIR Aims and Objectives 2026-2030 Support more prisoners We currently reach an average of 700 individual prisoners each year through 2,500 choir sessions in 10 prisons. With the prison population expected to grow through 2029 problems with overcrowding and performance will persist. Therefore, the need for our service will continue. Support more Graduates We are in contact with more than 130 Graduates, by phone, mail and through MJ’s Community Choirs. Demand for our service will rise due to our expansion plans, and gaps in official provision. Improve conditions inside prisons We refuse to accept the shocking conditions we see in prisons, including the paucity of healthcare and mental health support. We stand up for the human dignity of prisoners at every opportunity. Raise public awareness We continue to engage the wider public to amplify our message of radical compassion for prisoners, and to underline the urgent need for systemic reform. Expand our network of partnerships We continue to build on our existing partnerships with PACT, Koestler Arts et al, and develop new relationships that deepen the support we offer to prison leavers and their families. Expand & improve what we do By 2030 we will increase the number of prisoners we work with by expanding into new prisons in new regions. We will also improve what we do by increasing attendance at choir sessions, enhancing comms to prisoners and staff, and by building relationships at all levels. We will continuously invest in training for our staff and volunteers. Increase our Volunteers & Peer Mentors By 2030 we will grow our family of trained Volunteers and Peer Mentors alongside the LC Team to support more Graduates in the community. We will further develop the Liberty Choir Advisory Council, benefitting from lived experience to improve charity policy and best practice going forward. Influence criminal justice leadership We will utilise our network of prison Governors, MOJ contacts, the LC Advisory Council and the strength of our Board connections to influence policy and decision-making at the highest levels. Maximise press & publicity opportunities We will leverage our media experience to build on high profile exposure in The Times, The Observer, BBC Radio et al, coordinating imaginative grassroots fundraising drives with powerful social media campaigns. Strengthen alliances and synergy We will meet regularly with the leadership of complementary organisations to explore joint funding opportunities, and public events that move the national conversation forward.
