Poverty 2 Prosperity - Challenge Pack

Lesson Objective To assess a range of information to formulate/develop a personal opinion. Thank You For The Memories If Only I’d Known ItWas You... ItWasn’tMe Degrees Of Truth Agree/disagree statements Everyone in the world has the right to live in an unpolluted environ- ment It is okay that some people have very little food – that is the way the world works It is everyone’s responsibility to look after the environment and preserve it for the future The world is fair place for all its citizens in my opinion The solution to poverty is to send old computers and books to poorer schools in places that don’t have them Launch ‘Horseshoe line up’ activity, ‘agree/disagree’ line. Statements are read aloud and pupils have to stand in the ‘horseshoe’ and show if they agree or disagree. They can stand anywhere in the ‘horseshoe line up’ but have to back up their position with a reason and opinion on the statement. To extend the launch activity you could stop part way through and discuss what poverty actually is - is it more than lack of money? Make a class definition. Group Work In groups pupils receive a pack with statements/information on the ‘What If…. Scenarios’ from organisations such as Greenpeace, WWF, Oxfam, politicians, local people, etc. What if scenarios: …what if there are no bees? …what if the soil is not good enough for crops to grow? …what if there are no wild orang-utans? …what if there is no fish to have with your chips? …what if there are no Cumbrian lamb chops? ...what if there are no hedges? In groups pupils use the ‘what if’ scenarios and decide which is fact and which is an opinion. 1. What is happening? 2. Why is this happening? 3. What evidence is there to support this? 4. Can you think of any possible solutions? 5. How will it affect you directly or indirectly?
