Poverty 2 Prosperity - Challenge Pack

Lesson Objective To think creatively about current lifestyles and ask ‘does it have to be this way?’ Ignorance is Bliss Moving Forward The Climate andMe Imagining Change Launch Hand out one image to each pupil. Pupils have to find the others in their group and then place the images in order of date. (e.g. from earliest to most current). Five images each, showing the progression from first invention to present day: • washing clothes • cars • cooking methods • cleaning • lighting The teacher can then encourage pupils to think about why change happens and what triggers change e.g. a need for change due to demand, change in raw materials, prices, environmental impact etc. Group Work Using the most up-to-date image from the launch activity. Pupils are asked the question, ‘is this the most effective product of it’s kind?’ Consider this from the producer’s, the consumer’s, and the environment’s point of view. How do we move forward/progress? If going back to how we used to live and repeating what we do now is not the solution, what comes next? Use the product evaluation sheet to evaluate the impact of the product. Can we achieve this task in a different way, or does it need to happen at all? i.e. we’ve already designed self cleaning glass, so can we design clothes that don’t need washing? (Check out claims about merino wool products - www.icebreaker.com) . Also consider how these products can be made accessible to communities across the world.
