Thoughts 2 Actions ... extending thinking into doing Our aspiration in designing the Challenge Packs has been that they are part of a journey. For some this will be completely new; for others this may be the catalyst to move on from just thinking about the issues to doing more. For others we hope that this will be the confirmation that the journey they have started is worthwhile and that they should progress further. We would like all participants to be more aware of the wider picture, not to accept everything at face value and, importantly, to put themselves and others in a position to make informed choices. The Challenge Packs will have been useful if participants move to the standpoint where they are able to say ‘I choose to do this because…’ The Challenge Packs will have been outstanding if participants are able to say ‘I choose not to because…’ Having completed one or more of the Challenge Pack lessons or having become particularly ‘engaged’ with one aspect, we hope that staff and students will want to do or know more as they continue with their journey. The purpose of this section is to frame the next stage. The extension activities may be the basis for group discussions, for Philosophy for Children (P4C) sessions, for further research, or the basis for making presentations. Significantly, these activities could give participants the confidence to move their personal journey forward by creating their own questions and challenges. Most importantly the activities should enable young people to take action that is based on informed choices, being more aware of the implications of their actions for others, locally, nationally and globally. ‘… humanity stands at a crossroads.
