Cumbria Community Foundation - Annual Review 2025

23 Paola Bethmage, of the New Balance Foundation, explained why they chose to set up a fund with the Community Foundation: “Their deep expertise and trusted relationships within the community make them an invaluable partner as we align with New Balance Foundation’s mission to empower youth through community-led, outcome-driven programmes that foster lifelong health and success in Cumbria.” The New Balance Foundation Get Active Fund supported Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project to deliver outdoor adventure sessions for girls, including climbing and paddle sports, to build confidence, teamwork, and emotional wellbeing, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Edwin and Anita Mackay decided they wanted to leave a lasting legacy of support to the young people of their community – Seaton, in West Cumbria. Following their deaths, part of the proceeds from the sale of their home was gifted to the Community Foundation, for the creation of a new fund to benefit local young people. The first grants from the Edwin and Anita Mackay Memorial Fund were awarded in 2025, to groups including Seaton Football Club, which helped buy equipment for their new under-fives group. Pat Morris, of Barrow, received a grant from our Winter Warmth Appeal last year. She said: “I'm extremely grateful. I need warmth to stay healthy, like many people of my age do. And I'm really proud to be 80. “I have these worn-out jumpers that I've worn in the wintertime, that have really had it. So I wear them in bed now, to keep warm in bed. We’re very fortunate that people are kind enough to help us out and give to the appeal. Another way to support the Community Foundation is by becoming a member. See page 25 for more information.
