38 NOTREDAMECOLL.AC.UK DIGITAL GAMES DESIGN QUALIFICATION: LEVEL 3 BTEC EXTENDED CERTIFICATE DURATION: TWO YEAR COURSE – EQUIVALENT TO ONE A LEVEL EXAMINATION BOARD: PEARSON WHAT DO I NEED TO STUDY THIS COURSE? You will need five GCSEs at grade 4 including GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths. WHAT WILL I STUDY? Students will create digital games (from initial concept to design), study development & programming, and therefore start to develop the technical skills required to work in the games industry. Students will learn about the various roles and responsibilities in the industry – from technical artists to game developers and programmers to games testers – and how these individuals work together to create games. Students will also learn to write proposals and pitches for a commission, and produce a games treatment outlining their ideas and concepts. Students will progress their technical skills in 3D animation and programming. The course is assessed through coursework (67%) and supervised assessments (33%). WHAT NEXT? The computer games industry is a growing sector and sales are now higher in the UK than for the video and music industries combined. Therefore, there are increasing opportunities for students to progress to a related course at university, such as Games Design, or onto a relevant apprenticeship. DID YOU KNOW? The Video Games Industry is worth £6 million per day to the UK economy. £37m DRAMA AND THEATRE QUALIFICATION: A-LEVEL DURATION: TWO YEAR COURSE EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA WHAT DO I NEED TO STUDY THIS COURSE? Grade 4 in GCSE English Language. There is no requirement to have studied GCSE Drama (but if you have, you should have gained a grade 5 or higher). You may have gained suitable experience in other ways e.g. through private drama training or membership of a youth theatre. WHAT WILL I STUDY? There are two major practical assessments which require you to work with scripted plays and devise your own theatre. You will specialise in either acting, set, lighting or sound design. You will sit a written exam which will test your creative skills in making theatre. You will study two set texts and write about a live theatre visit, analysing the key components of theatre making. WHAT NEXT? A-level Drama and Theatre will provide you with invaluable transferable skills which can be applied to any career. You may choose to continue studying drama at an accredited drama school, which can lead to university courses in drama, directing, acting, theatre design, and arts administration.
